Finding Love and Light: A New South African Short Film
Written and directed by Joel Wenyira and produced by Nolulamo Maquthu, Finding Love and Light premiered online on March 1st, supported by the Christian Filmmakers Network. The event included a virtual meet-and-greet and Q&A. I loved the idea of engaging with the production team, but due to connectivity issues, I missed it. Still, I was glad I could watch the film afterward. I watched Finding Love and Light with my 17-year-old niece, and she really found it relatable. The mix of acting and singing made the story feel alive and emotional, and I appreciated how the film used music, dance, and storytelling to share a message of faith. The film is about Lebo, a young woman who is struggling with grief ,rejection and addiction. A group of teenagers introduce her to a church, where she begins a journey of healing, faith, and self-discovery. Thoughts on the Film: I enjoyed the performances, but I felt that Lebo’s story moved too quickly—her reconciliation with her father happened so fast that it lost some emotional weight. Also, the sound levels were inconsistent, with some scenes being too quiet compared to the music. Despite this, I loved the film’s message. Faith-based musicals are rare, and this one showed how powerful storytelling can be in spreading the Gospel. Final Thoughts This film is a great example of how creativity can be used as ministry. Watching it with my niece made the experience even more special, and I hope to see more projects like this that inspire and uplift.
